What they are

What are occupational lenses?

Do you lift your chin to see the monitor with your distance glasses? Does your neck hurt at the end of the day? Those symptoms have a name: raised-chin syndrome. And a solution: occupational lenses.

Unlike pharmacy reading glasses (only at 40 cm) or conventional progressives (all distances), occupational lenses are calibrated specifically for the work environment: from the keyboard to colleagues across the office. They have an inverted-progression design that optimises most of the lens for working distances (40 cm to 4 m).

Occupational glasses in your own frame

Occupational glasses are work glasses for people with presbyopia who spend long hours between a screen, paperwork and their desk. Occupational lenses, also called office lenses, put near and intermediate vision first, because that is where you work, and leave distance vision to your everyday glasses.

With Lens4Glasses you don’t need a new frame: you send us your glasses, we make the lenses to your prescription and send them back fitted by registered optometrists.

Who are office lenses for?

They are usually recommended from around 40, when presbyopia starts. They are a good fit if any of these sound familiar:

  • You wear progressives and tilt your head back at the computer to find the screen zone.
  • You use reading glasses and the monitor, or the person in front of you, looks blurry.
  • You work long hours indoors: office, home working, front desk, reception or a clinic.
  • You switch between a laptop, a second screen and documents all day.

They don’t replace your distance glasses. For driving or being outdoors you need a different pair.

Occupational, progressive or reading glasses

Lens type Distances covered When to choose it
Reading glasses (single vision) One only, around 40 cm Reading or close work, no computer
Occupational Near and intermediate, up to 1.3, 2 or 4 metres Long hours of screen and desk work
Progressive Distance, intermediate and near One pair for the whole day

Many customers use both: progressive lenses for everyday life and occupational lenses at their desk. If you only read, near single vision lenses may be enough. We explain it with examples in what type of lenses to choose.

How to choose your occupational lenses

  1. Measure your workspace. Think about the furthest thing you need to see sharply while working. If it is the screen, 1.3 metres is usually enough. If you also look at someone across the desk, choose 2 metres. For meetings, a room or customers, choose 4 metres.
  2. Pick the coating. Anti-reflective coating removes glare from office lighting and screens. The blue light + UV filter is designed for people who spend the day in front of monitors.
  3. Match the thickness to your prescription. 1.5 up to ±2, 1.6 from ±2 to ±4 and 1.67 from ±4 to ±6. Rimless and semi-rimless frames need at least 1.6.
  4. Have your prescription ready. We need your distance prescription and your near addition, the same as on a progressive prescription. If in doubt, our opticians check it before we make the lenses.

Occupational lenses: range and price

There are two ranges: a white-label occupational lens from a major European laboratory, from €129 a pair in index 1.5 (from €159 with anti-reflective and hard coating), and the ZEISS occupational lens with DuraVision Silver anti-reflective included, from €249. Thinner lenses cost from €199 in index 1.6 and from €299 in index 1.67, and a rimless frame adds €30; the working distance doesn’t change the price. The configurator shows the total, per pair and fitted in your frame, before you pay. To compare with other lenses, see how much it costs to replace glasses lenses.

How to replace your occupational lenses, step by step

  1. Configure your lenses online: range, distance, frame, index, coating and prescription.
  2. Send us your glasses in a hard case. Return shipping is free on orders over €50. Collection is free in mainland Spain and Portugal; elsewhere its cost is shown in the basket before you pay.
  3. We check your prescription and contact you if any fitting measurement is missing.
  4. We make and fit the lenses and send your glasses back. It usually takes 5 to 10 working days.

Adaptation and warranty

The working zones of an occupational lens are wider than those of a progressive, so getting used to them is usually easy. Even so, you have a 90-day adaptation guarantee. All lenses also come with a 3-year warranty.

A pair of Standard Range occupational lenses fitted into your frame costs from €129 with a 1.5 index and clear lenses, without anti-reflective coating. With anti-reflective coating and hardening, from €159, and with a blue-light filter + UV, from €189. The ZEISS version starts at €249, with the DuraVision Silver anti-reflective coating included. If you need thinner lenses, the 1.6 index starts at €199 and the 1.67 at €299. Prices per pair, VAT included.

No. With semi-rimless or rimless frames the minimum index is 1.6: from €199 per pair for semi-rimless and from €229 for rimless (Standard Range, clear lenses).

No. You can choose occupational lenses for clear vision up to 1.3, 2 or 4 metres and the price is the same; what changes the price is the range, the coating and the index.

No. Occupational lenses are optimised for indoor distances (up to 4 metres). For driving you need a full distance prescription, which occupational lenses do not safely cover. Use them exclusively in your work environment and keep your distance glasses for driving or outdoor activities.

Progressives are designed for all distances (far, intermediate and near), so the space for each zone is reduced. Occupational lenses concentrate most of the lens on working distances, with a high-definition visual field for the office that is far more comfortable. They are complementary, not substitutes.

With distance glasses you raise your chin to use the central area of the lens; with standard progressives you tilt your head back to use the intermediate zone. Both postures strain the neck over hours. Occupational lenses place the screen zone directly in front of your pupil, allowing a natural posture.

No. Their distance-vision zone is very limited and does not provide the sharpness needed to drive, do sport or move around open spaces safely. They are intended for indoor and office use.
